Groove's history
In September, Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue took 9yr old Groove into our care. He was being surrendered by his owner and was this very small, 34 lb. basset in very poor shape. To begin with, he was blind in one eye (it's believed to be the result of glaucoma that wasn't caught in time) and we were told by the prior owner that Groove had "bad breath". The fact was, Groove had an abscess on one of his teeth that not only looked painful, but also smelled so bad. This resulted in poor Groove having all of his teeth extracted except for about 4 that are remaining. During his dental surgery, a part of his upper jaw basically just disintegrated into the vet's hand, so he lost that, too.

As if this isn't all enough, Groove has the WORST ear infection! It's so bad that it had to be cultured to figure out just what kind of bacteria it was because it was resistant to so many medications. To this day, we are still battling this.

The worst condition of all is his blindness. He suddenly lost sight in the one good eye that he came to us with only a week or so after he was with his foster parents. Groove was rushed to the vet and thus beginning the month-long quest to try and restore his vision. After undergoing surgery followed by a cornucopia of medications around the clock (every two hours), the ultimate outcome was that his vision was not returning and as a matter of fact, the eye was too painful to keep. Groove was going to be completely blind and he had to have his eye removed. Shortly after he returned to his foster home, he had another health crisis. Groove hadn't eaten for 2 days straight and was very thirsty and urinating frequently in the house. He was, therefore, taken to the hospital yet again. After remaining at the hospital for 2 days and undergoing testing, it was suspected that he has Cushings Disease, which is a problem with the adrenal glands, which control metabolic function. We are currently waiting on the final word as to whether or not this is indeed what he has, and to find out what medications can be used to control it.

Everyday, we are amazed by Groove's will to live, his happy, tail-wagging attitude and his spirit after all the painful conditions he's had to endure. With all of this going on with Groove, the bills have been piling up. We are looking at $4000.00 just for this little guy. That doesn't leave much for the rest of the dogs we have in rescue. If everyone just donates something, that will make all the difference in the world for these needy dogs. Thank you all for whatever you can do!
